What if we really are the only intelligent, conscious life in the observable universe?
And what if the only life self-annihilated?
Although, that said, galaxy alone is so large, with so many possibly habitable planets and systems, that it seems utterly unlikely that we’re the only conscious life to have ever built a primitive civilization.
(But, we can only ask this question because we are lucky enough to exist. But this logic that only applies to great filters against life that are now behind us.)
Either way, let’s try our best to mitigate the risks of self-destruction at least until we find respectable aliens, OK?
(But, ironically, alien threat would probably unite the world faster than anything else.)
